Old wood-burning stove: may it still be used?

The Federal Immission Control Ordinance set deadlines for older wood-burning stoves – the last one expired at the end of 2024. What this means for your stove and which exceptions apply.

Old wood-burning stove: may it still be used?

Many customers ask us whether their older wood-burning stove may still be used. The basis is the 1st BImSchV (German Federal Immission Control Ordinance). It sets limits for fine dust and carbon monoxide and has introduced deadlines for older stoves in stages. ## The deadlines What counts is the date on the type plate (date of type testing): - up to the end of 1974 or no date: deadline expired at the end of 2014 - 1975 to the end of 1984: deadline expired at the end of 2017 - 1985 to the end of 1994: deadline expired at the end of 2020 - 1995 to 21 March 2010: deadline expired at the end of 2024 If a stove from these periods does not meet the limits of 0.15 g/m³ dust and 4 g/m³ carbon monoxide, it has had to be decommissioned, replaced or retrofitted with a dust filter since the deadline expired. Whether your stove meets the values can be clarified by a manufacturer’s certificate or a measurement by the chimney sweep. ## Important exceptions - masonry heaters (Grundofen) built by hand on site - open fireplaces that are only used occasionally - cookers and ovens under 15 kW - stoves that are the only heating in a flat - historic stoves manufactured before 1950 ## What applies to new stoves today New wood-burning stoves must meet considerably stricter values (stage 2: 0.04 g/m³ dust and 1.25 g/m³ carbon monoxide). Modern appliances burn more cleanly, need noticeably less wood and keep the glass clear for longer. ## Our advice Look at the type plate of your stove – usually on the back or behind the ash pan – or speak to your district chimney sweep. If the stove has to be replaced, we will gladly advise you on which new appliance suits your existing chimney and your installation location. Please bring a photo of the type plate and of the stove. All information without guarantee – the assessment by your district chimney sweep is decisive.
